Viv took in their surroundings. Anna’s tall, trimmed hedges and neatly composed flower beds, not quite a labyrinth, but reminiscent of one. The shine of starlight on old flagstone pathways. Fall blooms amid the mysterious foliage.
Midnight in the garden.
Their stroll might have been a romantic interlude if not for the subject at hand.
“You are a witch.” Nick spoke suddenly into the stillness. He sounded as if he were still trying to comprehend the statement. His boots and her shoes scuffed almost imperceptibly over the worn, gray stones as they walked.
“I am.” Viv felt silence would encourage him to open up, to share his thoughts as he worked his way through a morass of astounding information.
“It would be good to have a ward on the bar. I’d want to protect Jen and the others.” He looked over at her, his expression revealing a level of acceptance that shocked Viv. “None of this is their doing.”
“Neither is it yours,” Viv said, experiencing again the guilt of having dragged Nick into an unbelievable predicament. If she could undo it, she would. She would have never gone to see him. Never spent time getting to know him over the phone. And she most definitely would not have forged the fragile beginnings of a relationship with him.
The Amara had seen them together. He was now a target.
And it was all her fault.
“From what you’ve all explained to me, none of this falls at your feet either. You were summoned here by a force you couldn’t name, yet you followed it anyway. You gave up your life in Chicago,” he held up his hand when she would have spoken, “or at least put it on hold. And now you risk everything for the sake of women you’ve known for a handful of months.”
He stopped and faced her. “You risk it all repeatedly for the sake of strangers. For humanity.” He frowned at her. “How did you expect me to react? Did you think I would bail?”
“Honestly, I wasn’t sure. I just knew that after what happened tonight. What you saw.” She shrugged. “It was only fair to tell you the truth.”
He took one of her hands casually in his. “Need I remind you of my childhood? I shuffled between plenty of foster homes.” His eyes flashed with shadows. “I’ve seen things.” Then the gloom was gone and he smiled again. “What are a few well-placed witches in the scope of it all?”
Viv felt her jaw go slack then, thinking it was probably unattractive, she closed her mouth with a snap of teeth. “You have an overwhelmingly healthy attitude.”
“You have an overwhelming amount of baggage,” he said dryly.
Before she could decide whether to be insulted or not, Nick captured her face with both hands and held her still. Then he kissed her long and slow.
