“We’ve been through this once,” Hayden said, before accepting a second bottle of water from Lucia. “Surely we’re better prepared than the first time.”
“The Amara will have gained knowledge and experience as well, and you can expect them to use it.” The deep voice that answered surprised everyone in the room and caused an array of female gazes to land on the one who’d spoken from the doorway. While most looked at Dare with curiosity, a few couldn’t hide the intrigue that had nothing to do with a stranger showing up at their meeting but everything to do with a devilishly handsome man.
Refusing to acknowledge him, Willyn white-knuckled the coffee mug in her hands until little bolts of lightning shot through her fingers. She watched Dare from beneath her lashes as he glided into the room like he owned the place. He motioned to the coffee machine with a grin for Kylie then got down a mug after the younger woman pointed to where they were kept.
“While I agree with what you said, I don’t know who you are, and that’s a dangerous position to be in mister.” Paige was not as welcoming as Kylie, and her stance told everyone she was primed for action. Positioning herself near Willyn, Paige’s eyes grew dark and menacing as she watched the intruder. She was in full-on bodyguard mode.
Anna wisely intervened. “Everyone, I’d like you to meet Dare Forster. He’s an old friend who will be visiting. I realize the timing might raise some concern, but I think the coven could benefit from his presence.” She paused. “He has great power, and you all know how I feel about coincidences.”
“That there is no such thing while we face the evil,” Lucia purred in her enchanting accent. Her chocolate-brown eyes tightened at the corners as she appraised Dare. It was hard to say if she liked what she saw or was planning his demise. They all knew what Anna meant. His presence had something to do with Willyn’s trial, and there was no way to know if they should be worried or relieved.
Anna walked over to stand shoulder to arm with Dare, aligning herself with him and answering everyone’s question one final time. Anna accepted him, so she expected the coven to do the same. “He poses no threat to any of you.” She glanced at Willyn before turning to Dare. A flicker of warning danced across her face as she looked at him. “Do you,” she added, though it was more statement than query.
Dare stared back. “I want nothing more than an alliance with your coven.”
For some reason his words didn’t give Willyn any solace. She didn’t like the way he looked at the other women, his gaze lingering on each one as if assessing their worth. She held her breath when Dare’s scrutiny swept her way, but he skipped over her to focus on Paige. Standing firm, he held that witch’s stare until she grudgingly nodded. Once it became clear Paige wouldn’t go for his throat, the entire room exhaled as one.
Except for Willyn. Those deep blue eyes had finally found her and were riveted on her now as the other women fixed snacks or settled into their seats. Unsettled, she rubbed her forehead as if staving off a headache and prayed he would look away. Having his undivided attention made her shiver inside, and there was more to it than the unpleasant encounter she’d had with him before. Sensing his scorn, his judgment of her, Willyn found herself in total disagreement with Anna.
This man definitely felt threatening.
